Happy 2023! Let's start the new year off with a lesson that helps students discover the formula for the perimeter of a regular shape. It's from Brick Math's Advanced Measurement and Geometry Using LEGO® Bricks. In the lesson, the teacher starts by modeling a rectangle with four bricks. Then the teacher leads the students through several steps until they discover the formula for perimeter of any regular rectangle, including squares. In this way, students learn how to calculate perimeter as well as why the formula for perimeter always works for a rectangle.  This lesson is a wonderful example of the power of Brick Math to help students learn math in a deeper way. Rather than simply memorizing formulas, students develop true understanding of why the math works. They build foundations for their future math knowledge.
